How I Locate Sewer Lines Before the Digging Starts in Little Rock

I work as a sewer and drain technician in Little Rock, and a good part of my week is spent figuring out where buried sewer lines actually run before anyone starts digging. I have traced residential laterals through older yards, followed commercial lines beneath parking areas, and helped crews avoid cutting into pipes they could not see from the surface. Why I Locate the Line Before Opening the Ground

Why I Mark More Than One Point

Five or six good reference points can tell a much clearer story than one spot in the grass.

I also like to check the signal from different angles. Nearby metal, fencing, vehicles, and buried utilities can sometimes make a locator response harder to interpret, so walking across the suspected route from more than one direction helps me confirm the center of the signal. I compare the reading with the plumbing layout I already observed inside or around the building. If something does not make sense, I check again.

Good field notes matter. On larger properties, I may record approximate distances from fixed objects such as a building corner, cleanout, sidewalk edge, or fence line so the route can be understood after temporary paint begins fading. If the route suddenly makes no physical sense, I investigate instead of pretending the mark is good enough. That extra pass has caught mistakes more than once.

I also make sure the marked area matches the reason I was called.
